Who we are
Established in 1985*, the North Devon Group of RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders is a large and diverse membership which includes members across Devon, Cornwall and parts of Somerset, there are currently about 150 members, all of whom have passed the RoSPA advanced driving test within the past 3 years. We offer training in advanced driving and riding through our network of highly trained and skilled voluntary and qualified tutors. Our membership provides a first rate and nationally recognised advanced instruction course with observed drives and rides alongside our college presentation evenings. These can lead to a full RoSPA advanced driving or riding award.

So you’ve decided you want to take your riding or driving to the next level?

What does this now mean for you?

The following is a summary of what you can expect from us.

JOINING

So you've made the decision to become a better driver or rider – the first step is to contact the Membership Secretary - use our contact form or call us.

We’ll arrange a free ‘taster’ assessment ride or drive with you for you to see how we work and for us to get some idea of your needs.

We’ll ask you to bring your licence, MOT, glasses (if required) and insurance documents.

Once signed up as an  associate, you’ll be introduced to the group and your tutor.

The training is provided by volunteers who have passed RoSPA’s advanced test and are trained in how to tutor others in a professional and supportive way.

There are various types of training run by the group, these include 1:1 sessions, drive/ride events (e.g. lunch or breakfast days), slow riding training, museum trips and trips overseas.

We find a blend of the above produces great results and builds our community.

WHAT TRAINING TO EXPECT

You'll use your own vehicle and our tutors will give you advice and guidance throughout your ride or drive. As an associate you’ll be provided with your own training handbook to enable us and you to keep a record of your progress.

Your training sessions are flexible and tailored to your learning style and needs.

You should make the Training Officer aware of anything that could help us to tailor learning to suit your own circumstances.

The length of training is dependent on you and is different for all associates. This will be discussed on your initial assessment.

Ultimately, you may decide to take the advanced test, but equally it's not obligatory and many choose not to.

If you do wish to take the test, then  the following applies:

Once your Tutor considers you ready for test, this will mean that you are capable of providing consistent and polished riding or driving for a few training sessions, you will then be recommended for a pre-test ride or drive.

The Training Officer will contact one of the senior training team members for a pre-test session.

The training team are available to you for support and guidance to get you through your test.

Once signed off by a senior member of the team, you will be invited to apply for your test which will be conducted by a professional ex-police examiner, registered with RoSPA.

Test passes are graded bronze, silver or gold, depending upon the skills that you demonstrate on the day.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TEST?

It's entirely up to you. Many riders or drivers will choose to remain members and join us on group rides / drives, holidays and other activities in order to help them maintain their skills.

If you tested at bronze standard and you want to pursue a higher pass mark,  then you are more than welcome to retest.

Discuss your test report with the Training Officer who will be able to assist you with further training to retest.

If you gained silver or gold standard on your test then becoming a tutor yourself is a great way to help others whilst continuing to improve your own skills.

If this is something you would like to do, speak to the Training Officer, who will provide you with your training handbook and allocate you with specific Tutor training.

This will be from advanced and senior tutors who are further qualified.

We also have two Level 3 (Diploma) holders within the group.

There are many ways to contribute to the group as a tutor, however if you don’t feel you wish to become a tutor there are plenty of other ways you can join in, such as helping to organise events, become a committee member or helping with the stand at biking events.

BECOMING AN ADVANCED TUTOR OR SENIOR TUTOR

It is usual for someone who has shown exceptional and consistent tutor training to be invited to be trained as an advanced tutor.

Tailored training will be provided by senior and advanced tutors from within the group.

You will need to undertake an Advanced Tutor Test which requires a gold standard ride as well as other areas of testing.

There is a written test as part of this process.

Once you’ve achieved your Advanced Tutor test pass it is usual that our advanced tutors become part of the training group and assist with organising and assisting the Training Officer with specific events.

You may be involved in assisting the Training Officer with assessment rides for new joiners.

It’s likely you will be asked to make presentations during the year at the monthly training sessions.

To become a senior tutor will take longer –there are currently four senior tutors within the group and one or two are our original founding members of the group from 1999!

Don't forget…

Our mission is to help you to be a better, safer and more confident rider or driver.

It's up to you whether to take a test, become a tutor or even stay with the group, there's no pressure!
