Becoming a better rider

What can RoSPA Motorcycle Training offer you?

As riding conditions are constantly changing and becoming more hazardous everyday, experienced riders will regularly review, adapt and update their road skills. At RoSPA we will train you to become more aware of the hazards that arise in everyday riding and give you the opportunity to extend your skills and knowledge that will not only make you safer on the road but will also give you more confidence to tackle everyday situations on our busy roads.

Rider skills for life!

We have a thriving Motorcycle Section. During the past few years there has been a big increase in the number of riders taking the Advanced Riding Test through our North Devon Group.

Our large contingent of volunteer motorcycle tutors include police motorcyclists and others with very extensive ability. Every one has been carefully trained to ensure that you get the very best benefit from their experience.

With a combination of classroom sessions and regular ride-outs you will be encouraged to achieve your highest performance; leading to a safe, enjoyable and progressive ride.

How does it work?

We train you both in the class room and on the road. While we teach you theory in a classroom over some of your evenings, the best classroom is real world. Your Tutor will explain how to deal with hazards, road positioning, bike handling skills and how to use the visual point and read the road ahead. Regular rest stops during the ride provide an opportunity to discuss points of detail and explain (and debate) some of the finer points of Roadcraft, the system of riding that's used.

The rides take place usually on a Tuesday evening at 6.30pm or during winter on Sundays at 9.30am.  You can expect to ride for about an hour during each session depending on the type of roads being ridden and the areas of development for the individual concerned. Of course, advanced riders must be able to apply their skills in all conditions and you can expect to be trained in both wet and dry conditions to allow your skills to develop.

We are, however, always aware of the need for safety and never push riders beyond their capabilities. With targeted training we aim to incrementally provide all of those we train with the skills, temperament and know-how to ride progressively and safely in all conditions.

What else do we do?

In addition to formal training members of the group organise regular social ride outs, these are generally held on the first Sunday of every month throughout the year, along with several overseas trips. These serve as an informal method of practicing advanced riding.

The Rider group also offer a number of social events that are not bike based but provide a great opportunity to meet other members within the group. We also provide marshalling support to other charitable organisations.

Checkout our Events page to find out when the next ride or event is organised.
